No two homes are alike, and each has its own flooring requirements. Some are perfect for hardwoods, some require plush carpets, and others work best with vinyl or stone. Which option is “right” really comes down to homeowners’ preferences and needs — something only you will know when it’s time to choose flooring for your home.

If you’re on the fence about switching from carpets to hardwoods, this guide is for you. It contains some common, quick facts about both options to help jumpstart your path toward a decision.

The Case for Hardwoods

Plenty of homeowners love hardwoods’ classic, traditional feel. Hardwoods can be stained to fit any décor, but their timeless look and homey feel come at a bit of an expense — both budget and time. That makes them a bit more work than their plush carpet counterparts.

Here are some of the things you need to know about hardwoods before deciding to have them installed:

  • They require upkeep. Hardwoods need regular care, including near-daily sweeping or dusting and weekly mopping with hardwood-specific products.
  • Hardwoods are notoriously easy to damage if you’re not careful. Adding runners to high-traffic areas, adhering pads to furniture feet, and avoiding heels and other sharp-soled shoes can help.
  • They also stain easily, making water and other liquids a no-no. Spills not cleaned up immediately can warp the wood color, creating an issue that only sanding and refinishing will fix.
  • UV rays can bleach hardwoods, lightening the stain color and creating uneven tones. Drapes and rugs can help mitigate this issue.
  • Animals and hardwoods are a tough match, but not one that can’t be. Keep water dishes away from hardwoods, lay area rugs for play time, and ensure your pets get plenty of outside exercise to minimize too-high energy levels.
  • Hardwoods must be refinished and resealed. Your sealcoat lasts about three years, and then you’ll have to reapply. Refinishing happens less frequently, typically occurring when floors become discolored or scratched to the degree that you’d like to have them redone.

It may seem like a lot of work, but the result is beautiful hardwood floors you love. If you’ve read all the above and the flooring option is still your favorite, it might be time to make the switch.

The Truth About Carpets

By comparison, carpets seem like a breeze.

  • You’ll want to vacuum regularly to keep dust, pet hair, and other debris cleaned up.
  • Spot cleaning helps remove stains from food or drink spills.
  • Laying down runners or area rugs in high-traffic zones minimizes wear and tear.
  • Having carpets deep cleaned twice per year reduces germs, bacteria, and discoloration.

Very little goes into caring for carpets, cleanup takes little to no time, and you’re not required to do anything too specific to make them last for decades. If that no-fuss lifestyle seems more your speed, it might be a good idea to consider keeping your carpets.
