When it comes to luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring, understanding the difference between the wear layer and overall thickness helps you choose the right product for your space. LVP flooring is popular because it’s low-maintenance and attractive and resembles hardwood. It’s also waterproof and consists of planks rather than a large sheet.
If you’re considering this flooring type, learn more about the various components of vinyl plank flooring and have our experts install it in your home. District Floor Depot specializes in responsibly sourced solid, engineered and vinyl floors. We offer in-home consultations, a one-year craftsmanship warranty on installs, fast delivery and a wide selection of in-stock products, and our team can bring samples to you.
A before and after of our LVP installation work speaks for itself.
Vinyl Floor Wear Layer
The wear layer refers to the top surface of the flooring, which determines the floor’s durability and withstands daily wear and tear, including:
- Foot traffic
- Spills
- Scratches or scuffs
- Active pets
- Toddling kids
The vinyl plank flooring wear layer acts as a protective barrier, preserving the floor’s appearance over time. It’s measured in one-thousands of an inch, or mils.
What Is the Wear Level for LVP?
The wear rating of LVP flooring should be around 12 to 20 mils for residential use. The higher the mils, the better the protection from scratches, scuffs, spills and other everyday wear and tear. Our LVP flooring options range from 6 to 20 mils.
Vinyl Floor Thickness
Luxury vinyl flooring thickness refers to the total thickness of the plank, including the wear layer and the underlying layers such as the core and base layer. Thickness is measured in millimeters (mm). Our high-end luxury vinyl planks can be up to 8mm thick — vinyl planks with higher thicknesses are usually used in commercial spaces with more foot traffic.
